Selank Overview

Selank is a synthetic peptide originally developed and studied in Russia. It has been investigated primarily for its potential effects on anxiety, mood, cognition, stress response, and neurological function. It has been used clinically in some countries, particularly Russia, but it is not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as a prescription medication in the United States.

Selank, a synthetic peptide derived from the naturally occurring immune peptide tuftsin, has shown a distinct ability to alleviate anhedonia and reverse emotional blunting in preclinical models. Developed by the Russian Academy of Sciences, it is primarily researched as a non-sedating anti-anxiety and cognitive-enhancing compound.

Optimization of the Dopamine and Serotonin Systems

Anhedonia is fundamentally a disorder of the brain's reward pathway, which relies heavily on dopamine. Selank modulates the metabolism and signaling of monoamine neurotransmitters, specifically dopamine and serotonin. By optimizing these levels, it helps restore the brain's sensitivity to rewarding stimuli, allowing individuals to experience motivation and joy again.

Selank acts as an inhibitor to the enzymes responsible for breaking down enkephalins. Enkephalins are endogenous peptides (natural, internal compounds) that bind to opioid receptors in the brain to regulate emotional responses, stress, and pain. By preventing their breakdown, Selank prolongs their presence in the brain, which helps soothe the nervous system and directly lift flat, emotionally blunted states.

Reported and Studied Effects

Research and clinical experience with Selank have described a number of potential effects, including reduction of stress and anxiety, antidepressant and mood-supporting effects, improvement in short-term and long-term memory, enhanced learning, mental processing speed and accuracy, reduction of anhedonia, increased relaxation and emotional well-being, improved focus and concentration, and greater emotional control. Research has also demonstrated symptom improvement from the effects of alcohol, nicotine, and substance withdrawal.

Dosage

Subcutaneous injecton:

For reconstitution, add 2 mL of bacteriostatic water to a 10 mg vial, or for each 10 mg. This produces a concentration of 5 mg/mL, or 5,000 mcg/mL. On a U-100 insulin syringe:

*5 units = 250 mcg — Lower referenced dose

*10 units = 500 mcg— Upper end of commonly referenced single-dose range

Some physician and research protocols reference 250–500 mcg subcutaneously once daily. Published human studies have not established an FDA validated maximum subcutaneous dose or minimum interval for repeat dosing in the United States, although protocol has been extensively documented in Russa, Ukrain and other Eastern European countries.

A practical upper dosing range for Selank is approximately 500 mcg per administration. Doses above 500 mcg have not been clearly demonstrated to provide additional clinical benefit. A dose of 1,000 mcg (1 mg) has not been established as toxic. Accordingly, increasing the dose beyond 500 mcg should not be assumed to produce greater benefit.

Other sources describe a practical range of 250–500 mcg once daily, with some nonstandard protocols using the same range twice daily.

Duration of effect: Community and secondary references commonly describe noticeable Selank effects as lasting approximately 4–6 hours.

Cognitive and Functional Effects

Unlike traditional sedatives and some anti-anxiety medications, Selank has been reported to produce calming effects without significant sedation or motor impairment. Studies have described improvement in anxiety and cognitive performance without the degree of drowsiness or psychomotor impairment associated with many conventional tranquilizing medications. Users and researchers have described a combination of relaxation, mental clarity, focus, and a sense of well-being.

Dependence and Tolerance

Selank is not generally considered to have the addictive properties associated with benzodiazepines, opioids, nicotine, or other habit-forming substances. Available research has not demonstrated a typical pattern of physical dependence or drug-seeking behavior.

Administration

Selank has been studied and administered by several routes, most notably intranasal administration, including nasal drops or sprays, and subcutaneous injection. Intranasal administration has been particularly common in Russian clinical use and research.

Safety Considerations

Published research has generally described Selank as being well tolerated. However, because research outside Russia and surrounding countries remains limited compared with widely approved medications, it is more accurate to state that serious adverse effects and clinically significant drug interactions have not been well established, rather than saying that none can occur. Individuals with a history of severe allergic or hypersensitivity reactions should exercise particular caution.

Availability

Selank has been researched and used clinically for many years in Russia and certain other Eastern European countries. It is not currently available as an FDA-approved prescription medication in the United States and is generally encountered in the United States as a research peptide rather than an approved therapeutic drug.

Summary

Selank is an extensively studied Russian-developed peptide with potential effects involving anxiety reduction, mood, memory, learning, concentration, stress response, and neurological protection. Research has also explored possible applications involving depression, attention difficulties, alcohol use, substance withdrawal, and cognitive function. Additional large-scale, independently replicated human studies would be useful in establishing effectiveness, long-term safety, optimal dosing, and potential interactions.

Important

Selank is not FDA-approved for diagnosing, treating, curing, or preventing disease in the United States. Information regarding Selank should be considered educational and research-oriented rather than a substitute for individualized medical care.
